Braces Survival Guide (For Adults and Kids)

Frisco Orthodontist

Are you one of the lucky ones who has braces, or will you or your child be getting braces soon? It can lead to a bit of anxiety knowing that you will need to adjust what you eat and how you brush and floss your teeth, not to mention the mild discomfort you may feel from time to time.

There are many ways to limit your discomfort and make your experience with braces a bit easier. Here is how to survive the coming months of treatment for misaligned teeth.

Use your dental wax, which protects your gums and the linings of your cheeks and lips. This provides a comfortable barrier from the sharp ends of wires and limits the instances of canker sores.

Just say no to hard, chewy, and/or sticky candy. These can get stuck and cause damage to your braces.  It is also important to cut up your food like steak, chicken and roasts into smaller bites.

Stock up on soft foods like mashed potatoes, applesauce, soups and macaroni and cheese. After your initial application and routine adjustments, your teeth and gums may be extra sensitive, so eating soft foods is the best way to go. There are many braces-friendly recipes available online that can make meals easier to plan.

Be prepared on the go with a dental kit. Keep extra supplies of dental wax, floss threaders, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a spiral dental brush in a travel-sized container so you can take care of your braces and any discomfort while away from home.

Keep over-the-counter pain relievers on hand to help minimize discomfort. While the majority of the discomfort goes away about a month after you get your braces, you will still need to get adjustments about every 4 to 6 weeks. Your teeth and gums may be sore after adjustments, so Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or other pain relief is a big help.

Continue your regular semiannual dental checkups. Just because you have braces doesn’t mean that you get to skip your regular oral health routines. You still need to see your regular dentist twice a year to avoid or treat cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease.

Communicate with your orthodontist. If something doesn’t feel right or you are in a considerable amount of pain, alert your provider right away instead of waiting for your next appointment.

Ask about ClearCorrect invisible aligners for straighter teeth without the look of metal braces. This is a beneficial option for professional adults desiring a more confident smile while maintaining a mature appearance.

For more information about adult braces, our friendly staff at Frisco’s Dental Place  in Frisco is available to answer any questions you may have. We offer evening and weekend hours, emergency dental care, and the convenience of a one-stop shop with general dentistry housed in the same location as orthodontics. Initial orthodontic consultations are provided free of charge.

Dental hygienist polishing a person’s teeth

Teeth cleaning (also known as prophylaxis, literally a preventive treatment of a disease) is a procedure for the removal of tartar(mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine toothbrushing. It is often done by a dental hygienist. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.

Dallas Root Canal

Dallas Root Canal | Endodontic Promotion.  Call Dallas Dental Place at 972-827-8337 for affordable root canal (endodontic) treatment. We have a special promotion this month.

Dental anxiety is very common, especially if you are already in pain. And it doesn’t help when you think about the sounds of drilling that you associate with serious dental work. Have you ever been to the dentist and you get the bad news that you need a root canal? Perhaps it’s the name that scares people, or the guilty fear of what happens when we don’t take care of our teeth properly. Well, don’t fret. A root canal is one of the most well-practiced dental procedures, and your dentist will keep you pain-free and have you done in no time. Sometimes, just being more informed can ease your nerves. What is a Root Canal? Once your teeth are fully developed, the pulp is no longer needed inside your teeth. The pulp in your teeth is made up of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue to help your teeth grow. However, sometimes this pulp stays in your teeth for a long time and can lead to a painful infection. If left untreated without a root canal, not only will pain persist, you can lose your tooth. The root canal procedure takes around 30-90 minutes depending on the severity of the root canal and the person’s mouth. In some cases where pain and infection are present, your dentist may be able to prescribe antibiotics and pain medication. The procedure is done as follows: A local anesthetic will be applied to the nerves that lead to the tooth A rubber suction will be placed around the tooth to keep the area clean during the treatment A small hole will be drilled into the tooth The infected pulp will be removed The root canal space is disinfected The endodontist will then fill the root canal space with a biocompatible material called Gutta Percha. The access cavity will be covered with a temporary material and will be assessed for permanent restoration You may be a candidate for a root canal if: You’re experiencing sensitive teeth for a prolonged period (hot and cold) Your gums and jaw are painful and swollen Your jaw and tooth hurts You have a fractured or cracked tooth A root canal will not only relieve your pain, and in most cases, the procedure itself is relatively painless. The procedure is not what it used to be, so if you have reservations make sure to talk to your dentist. If you’re experiencing dental pain, or it’s just time to schedule your next checkup, call Frisco’s Dental Place at 972-827-8337 to request an appointment, or request one online.

Frisco’s Dental Place has the latest orthodontic treatments designed to give you a more confident smile. We stay ahead of the trends and bring you the latest styles and most effective options when you need braces or an aligner or retainer. We have solutions for kids and adults alike.

We are your one-stop resource for orthodontics and dental care.

We frequently hear from patients that one of the things they love best about Frisco’s Dental Place is having both their dentist and their orthodontist in one place. We’re your one-stop resource for family dentistry and orthodontic treatment. We can make visits convenient so that you can visit your dentist and then walk down the hallway to visit your orthodontist, saving you time.

Because dental hygiene is so important, regular visits to the family dentist must continue every six months during orthodontic treatment. It is essential that the patient avoid food that can damage orthodontic appliances. The patient must also maintain a healthy, nutritional diet to achieve the best possible results from treatment. A good diet provides essential nutrients to bones and tissues undergoing change during orthodontic treatment.

We want you to have the time to explore your options. Initial orthodontic consultations are provided free of charge. Call our office today at (972) 827-8337 to make an appointment. Learn more about orthodontic treatment below.

What Is Orthodontics?

The purpose of orthodontics is to treat any type of malocclusion, which is simply another way of saying “bad bite.” When you have a malocclusion, that means your teeth, lips, and/or jaws don’t line up the way they should. As a result, your teeth may be crooked, your bite may not work correctly, and your jaws may look unbalanced.

To fix bad bites, specially trained dentists called orthodontists use braces and other corrective procedures, including materials often called “appliances,” to achieve tooth and jaw alignment. This correction of the teeth and their supportive structures makes for a healthy, attractive smile.

When Should I See an Orthodontist?

Kids should see an orthodontist at age 7.

Modern orthodontics is much different than it was a decade or so ago. When most people think of orthodontics, they think of teenagers. And the fact is, most orthodontics treatment begins between the ages of 9 and 14. However, by age 7, most children have a mix of adult and baby teeth. Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. That’s important, because some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they’re found early.

For these reasons, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. Of course, the check-up may reveal that your child’s bite is fine, and that can be comforting news.

Adult orthodontics: It’s never too late to get started.

Are you an adult who’s always wanted to change your smile? You can! Adult orthodontic treatment can be successful at almost any age. In fact, about one in every five orthodontic patients today is over age 18. Thanks to today’s smaller, less visible, more comfortable brackets, adults are finding braces more appealing. Many adults also choose Invisalign. Healthy teeth, bones, and gums respond well to orthodontic treatment at almost any age. It’s never too late to get a healthy, beautiful smile.

The Orthodontic Process:
Four Steps to Straighter Teeth

At your first orthodontic visit, Dr. Dominique Hunt will complete an orthodontic examination to determine your orthodontic needs.

Orthodontic records are the next step towards getting your braces. This appointment is approximately 1 ½ hours long and will include X- rays, a set of dental impressions, and photographs of you and your teeth. Your orthodontic records are used to diagnose your orthodontic problem more accurately so that Dr. Hunt can design a treatment plan specifically for you.

At the orthodontic consultation, Dr. Hunt will go over all of your orthodontic records and show you examples of braces, Invisalign aligners, and any appliances that may be involved in your treatment. The consultation is scheduled for 40 minutes and includes individual time with the doctor to ask any questions you may have involving your specific treatment.

Your treatment coordinator will then go over the financial contract, insurance benefits, and payment options. We will schedule the series of appointments necessary to get you started and discuss options for financing your treatment.

Your appointment to get your braces on can usually be scheduled on the same day or within a few days. Invisalign impressions can usually be taken at the consultation appointment, if you desire.

One of our highly trained orthodontic assistants will oversee the placement of your appliances and answer all of your questions as she walks you through the entire process from beginning to end.

For braces, each bracket is carefully positioned on each tooth by Dr. Hunt. Because this is such a critical step in the entire process, Dr. Hunt invests time in the smallest details to achieve the best results. On the day that your braces are placed, you can be sure that every detail has been considered, including bracket positioning, bracket prescription, bracket type, and wire selection.

For Invisalign, your impressions leave our office the same day they are taken. These impressions are sent to the Invisalign lab to be scanned and the computer model of your teeth is constructed. From this model, your custom aligners are created.

Once the aligners are received in our office, you are notified by phone and an appointment is set up to bond/glue any small, clear buttons/attachments to your teeth. These clear attachments act as your ‘braces’ and allow us to manipulate the teeth. Your first aligner is inserted and instructions on wear and care are given. Invisalign aligners are worn for 22-23 hours of the day and are usually changed every 2 weeks, or as prescribed by Dr. Hunt.

For more information on Invisalign, please visit their website at www.invisalign.com.

It is important that you make arrangements with our office to have a good cleaning, check-up, and fluoride treatment following the removal of your braces.

You will be pleased at how easy and comfortable the process is. At this appointment, you will be provided with a photo of your teeth before you had braces so you can compare how your beautiful smile looks now!

Before you leave the office to show the world your outstanding smile, we will need to take a final set of orthodontic records. We will also make you a set of retainers to hold your teeth into their final position. Dr. Hunt will decide which retainer is best for you and he will prescribe a protocol for wearing your retainers. Most patients are advised that they should wear their retainers indefinitely in some capacity. The general rule is “wear your retainers for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight.”

In general, a dentist will base the fee they charge for performing a wisdom tooth extraction on factors such as its expected level of difficulty and amount of time it will take to complete the procedure.
For the most part, these factors vary in accordance with the tooth’s positioning in the jaw (erupted vs. non-erupted & impacted). For this reason, fees are typically quoted using the following classifications.
Wisdom Teeth-Third Molar Classification.
The impacted mandibular third molar may present with various positions in the bone, and so the technique for its removal is determined by its localization. The classic positions of the tooth, depending on the direction of the crown of the tooth, are (according to Archer 1975; Kruger 1984): mesioangular, distoangular, vertical, horizontal, buccoangular, linguoangular, and inverted. Impacted teeth may also be classified according
to their depth of impaction, their proximity to the second molar, as well as their localization in terms of the distance between the distal aspect of the second molar and the anterior border of the ramus of the mandible. As far as the depth of impaction is concerned, mandibular third molars may be classified (according to Pell and Gregory 1933) as belonging to categories:  (1Mesioangular, 2 distoangular, 3 vertical, 4 horizontal, 5 buccoangular, 6 linguoangular, 7 inverted)

Inexpensive wisdom teeth extraction Dallas.  Impacted wisdom teeth are classified by the direction and depth of impaction, the amount of available space for tooth eruption and the amount soft tissue or bone that covers them. The classification structure allows clinicians to estimate the probabilities of impaction, infections and complications associated with wisdom teeth removal.[7] Wisdom teeth are also classified by the presence of symptoms and disease.[9]

Treatment of an erupted wisdom tooth is the same as any other tooth in the mouth. If impacted, treatment can be localized to the infected tissue overlying the impaction,[10]:440–441 extraction

Wisdom teeth (often notated clinically as M3 for third molar) have long been identified as a source of problems and continue to be the most commonly impacted teeth in the human mouth.  A lack of room to allow the teeth to erupt results in a risk of periodontal disease and dental cavities that increases with age.[7] Less than 2% of adults age 65 years or older maintain the teeth without cavities or periodontal disease and 13% maintain unimpacted wisdom teeth without cavities or periodontal disease.[8]
